There are a lot of myths about data privacy (or data protection) but at heart
it’s really quite simple. It’s about using personal data fairly, being honest
and open about what you’re doing with it, keeping it safe, and respecting
people’s privacy.
In practice that means knowing exactly what data your business holds,
where and why, and putting measures in place to maintain its security,
accuracy and quality. It means taking care about who uses that data and
how, and giving your customers and employees clear information so they
know what you’re doing and can make meaningful choices about their
personal data. It means being in control of your data…and being able
to show that you’re in control of it.
Now, read that paragraph again, substituting another business asset -
‘cash’, ‘stock’, or ‘hardware’, maybe - for ‘data’ and you’ll be nodding
along in agreement because it’s simply good business practice.
Personal data is one of your business’ most valuable assets, so why
would you treat it any differently?
